Was wondering how those who have firearms you want to sell go about it if you don't use an online auction or want to ship them.
I know if I sell them to a gun business I'll lose money but I like the satisfaction of knowing that they will no longer be registered somewhere in my name.
Any good tips?

You might have some success finding a local gun "collectors" group which may or may not have shows. I guess it depends on how many you want to sell as to whether this is a one-time or casual sale as opposed to a business.
If you sell on consignment the process of using a shop is not quite the haircut of selling outright to them.

We have a local online sales site similar to craigslist that allows guns to be sold. I'd look for something similar or place an add in the local paper.

I just watched the first ten minutes of the mid day local news and there were 3 crimes involving firearms reported with one a murder. Just like to take precautions.

Bryan actually we have two here that I can use but I think what I'm very interested in is knowing the buyer is stable. Lots of kooks out there. I can understand your concern for kooks in Maine.
In Idaho, public records can be searched by name and will show all arrests, tickets, etc. for a person. I did a quick search for Maine and only found pay sites. It would seem that Maine should have a free site for public record searches.
You could also talk with a local FFL and have him do the transfer for you. It might cost the buyer $20 or so.
