At work I have a lady who has a neat box that her dad had. It's a handgun box I would guess and affixed to the blue wool lined inside is a label that says
J. Venables & Son
Gun Makers
99 St. Aldate's Street
Opposite Christ Church,
OXFORD
Also written by hand in the upper corner is 320 GF or 320 6F
Although here at work we have QUITE a reference collection on firearms (both literature and firearms themselves) we have not found anything about that particular gun maker and nor have we found much online. We did find a list from 1852, a "phone book" of sorts that shows different businesses and where they're located, and there was a J. Venable Gun Maker listed.
Does anyone know anything more about that particular gun maker? When they may have become "& Son"?

Info I can find is from author Nigel Brown-
John Venables 1846-1863 in 1868 son was added to the name. Old address was 21 St Aldates St Oxford then in 1870 changed to 99 St Aldates. Firm seemed to last until 1900.

I found this stuff via Google:
Side by Sides of the World for Y2K says Gun maker John Venables was located in Oxford, England circa 1846 to 1900. In 1868 the business became Venables and Son. A John Venables side by side was listed in Elderkin and Son Ltd. 1958 catalog as good quality.
In their book, "British Gunmakers and their Trade Labels etc.,W.Keith Neal and D.H.Black,page 88 state,
"J.Venables & Son have been established at 99 St, Aldate Sreet,Oxford,a little before 1832& still conduct business at this address.[cica 1980].Plate 291 in this book shows a Venables trade label confirming the address. The differences in street numbers given by others, is almost certainley due to street renumbering.Examples of cartridges loaded and sold by Venables include "The Oxford" colour Blue or Black marked with the coat of arms of the city of Oxford, and Loaded only by J.Venables and Son, Gun and Rifle Makers.

I don't know about handguns, but there are listings on auction catalogs of his shotguns and rifles. Saw some on Christie's site most where boxlocks although there were a few sidelocks.

20 ga boxlock sold for 600 pounds in 2008 ...nice pic incl.

12 ga sidelock ...nice pics though view 3 is not the same gun (different engraving and more case colour)...view 1 and 4 show the name on side of gun...if you capture the pic and enlarge you should be able to confirm...
...not sure how long these auction sites keep this info up so look while the lookins good... 
and of course there is this old UJ thread on them...
